Little things worth knowing: Data Guard Broker Setup changes in 12c

One of the problems I have seen when deploying Data Guard for systems such as RAC One Node and policy managed databases was the static listener configuration you needed in 11.2. This has changed with 12c for the better if you are using Grid Infrastructure.

In the section about static listener registration a little addendum can be found (thanks to Patrick Hurley/@phurley for pointing this out to me!):

“A static service needs to be defined and registered only if Oracle Clusterware or Oracle Restart is not being used.”

This is good news, let’s put it to the test; I’m a great fan of Oracle Restart. If I ever find the time I’d like to repeat this test with clustered Grid Infrastructure. I think the quote mentioned earlier still stands true but I would like to see it with my own eyes.

JSON support in Exadata 12.1.2.1.0 and later

Some time ago Oracle announced that RDBMS 12.1.0.2 has built-in support for JSON processing. A little later it was also mentioned that you have support for JSON in the Exadata storage servers for offloading. This is probably a lot more exciting to users of JSON than it is to me as I’m not a developer. However, whenever an announcement such as the one I’m referring to is made I would like to see for myself how much of it is implemented in software. Like I said, I’m not a developer so apologies for a silly example: what I’m showing you here can probably done differently and is not the best use of an Exadata. But all I really wanted to test is if JSON support actually exists. I am using cellsrv 12.1.2.1.0 and RDBMS 12.1.0.2.2 for this test.

IO Resource Manager for Pluggable Databases in Exadata

Another interesting topic that goes over and above the CDB Resource Manager Plans I described earlier this week is the implementation of IORM Plans for Pluggable Databases. Pluggable Databases are an interesting object for studies, and I like to research things. When 12c came out there was no support for offloading initially, it is required that you are on cell software 12.1.x.x.x for full 12c support on Exadata. One aspect I was particularly interested in were PDBs and IORM. Limiting CPU on a PDB basis is already a cool thing, but in a hugely consolidated environment it does make sense to limit I/O based on a consumer group. Another one of the perks of working on Exadata :)

Testing 12c CDB Resource Plans and a little bit about OEM Express

Inspired by Sue Lee’s presentation at Enkitec’s E4 conference I decided to re-run my test suite to work out how you can use Database and I/O Resource Manager in Oracle 12.1.0.2.2 to help consolidating databases in the new Multi-Tenant architecture. I should point out briefly that the use of Multi-Tenant as demonstrated in this article requires you to have a license. Tuning tools shown will also require you to be appropriately licensed…

Smart Scan enhancements in Oracle Exadata 12c-inline LOBs

As part of the 12c release of the database and cellos Oracle introduced the ability to perform Smart Scans on inline LOBs. The enhancement is certainly for Secure Files only. And as always, if you would like to read up about Secure Files you can head over to Tim Hall’s website for the details.

To demonstrate the new behaviour I have used an 11.2.0.3 BP 22 database on Exadata 11.2.3.3.1 and 12.1.0.2.2 database on Exadata 12.1.2.1.0. The test case evolves around the following table:

 id number primary key,
 comments clob)
enable row movement 
tablespace users
lob (comments) store as securefile (
 enable storage in row
);

This is the short version, Oracle fills in the blanks and converts the table DDL to

Additional information on Oracle 12c big table caching

Teaching is on the things I like doing, and currently I am investigating the Oracle 12c features around caching data in the various memory areas. Since the In-Memory (cost) option has been discussed by other far more knowledgeable people I would like to share some findings about the big table caching here.

Some Background

In Oracle 12c you have two additional options to cache information: full database caching and big table caching. The first is great if you have a massively big machine with lots and lots of DRAM plus a clever OS that can deal with the inevitable ccNUMA setup you will have to tackle. And maybe don’t want to pay for the In-Memory option. This post is not about full database caching, but rather about the other possibility to cache blocks.

Exadata Fast Data File Creation

This post is the result of some testing I performed on Exadata data file creation. You may know that Exadata offloading incorporates SQL optimisations as well as some infrastructure work. For quite some time Exadata allowed the DBA to create data files a lot quicker than on traditional systems. This has been documented before, for example by @mpnsh here

Little things worth knowing: Is there a penalty in establishing a connection to Oracle using the MAA connection string? Part 2

In the very lengthy previous post about the MAA connect string I wanted to explain the use of the MAA connection string as promoted by Oracle. I deliberately kept the first part simple: both primary and standby cluster were up, and although the database was operating in the primary role on what I called standby cluster (again it’s probably not a good idea to include the intended role in the infrastructure names) there was no penalty establishing a connection.

Little things worth knowing: Is there a penalty in establishing a connection to Oracle using the MAA connection string?

Sorry for the long title!

I had a question during my session about “advanced RAC programming features” during the last Paris Oracle Meetup about the MAA connection string. I showed an example taken from the Appication Continuity White Paper (http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/options/clustering/application-continuity-wp-12c-1966213.pdf). Someone from the audience asked me if I had experienced any problems with it, such as very slow connection timeouts. I haven’t, but wanted to double-check anyway. This is a simplified test using a sqlplus connection since it is easier to time than a call to a connection pool creation. If you know of a way to reliably do so in Java/UCP let me know and I’ll test it.

Little things worth knowing: what does opatchauto actually do?

I recently applied system patch 20132450 to my 12.1.0.2.0 installation on a 2 node RAC system on Oracle Linux 7.1. While ensuring that OPatch is the latest version available I came across an interesting command line option in opatchauto. It is called “-generateSteps”.
