OOW2015 Private Cloud and DBLM

Yesterday I posted an entry on what was coming with OOW2015, specifically discussing the Oracle Management Cloud sessions. This post is similar but looking at one of the more “traditional” EM areas that my team is responsible for – Private Cloud and DBLM. The sessions that are of most interest here are:

OOW2015 is almost here!

Hard as it is to believe, yet again it is time for the biggest Oracle conference on the planet (or any other planet for that matter!) Yes, OOW2015 is just around the corner! Unfortunately I won’t be there this year, as I have my eldest daughter’s wedding shortly after it, but nevertheless having seen what’s coming up from the Enterprise Manager side of the house, there are a few sessions I can certainly recommend.

BI Publisher Tips and Techniques

A colleague of mine asked recently if we had any best practices for BI Publisher, the latest and greatest reporting tool we use within Enterprise Manager (the old tool, Information Publisher, is of course also still supported but this post is relevant to BI Publisher). As you would well know if you’ve been following my posts or heard me presenting at conferences, best practices is a term I hate, so rather than using that term let’s discuss some tips and techniques that might be relevant to you when using BI Publisher.

Tip #1: Allocate Extra Memory

The amount of required memory for BI Publisher depends on a huge number of factors – complexity of reports, size of datasets being returned, BI Publisher scheduling load, etc. We recommend adding at least 1.5 Gb of RAM for the OMS machine, but you may need as much as 4-5 Gb depending on the factors just mentioned.

Recommendations to Address Cloud Performance Issues via EM12c

So I’m going to start this post with an admission-  I don’t have access to a cloud environment to test this out, but I know what I would do first if I experienced slow response time on database creation or cloning via EM12c to the cloud and I would like to at LEAST post what I would do to give others the chance to test it out and see

Cloud Control 12.1.0.5 : It’s production upgrade day…

cloudI mentioned a couple of months ago I was planning to upgrade our production Enterprise Manager Cloud Control installation from 12.1.0.4 to 12.1.0.5. Well, today was the day. I held back a while because I knew I would be out of the country for a while on the Latin America tour and I didn’t want to make a big change before I ran away. :)

Middleware Diagnostics Advisor (MDA) Setup

One of the areas I’ve been exploring recently is the setup and use of the Middleware Diagnostics Advisor, more commonly known as MDA. MDA is an advisor in EM12c that analyzes the entire stack and provides diagnostic findings by identifying root causes for any problems it discovers. It correlates and analyzes the input and offers advice on how to resolve the problem. For example, it can help you identify that slow SQL statements or a JDBC connection pool is causing a performance bottleneck. As described in the documentation, MDA is currently supported for Oracle WebLogic Server 10g Release 3 (10.3) and higher. MDA monitors JDBC DataSources, EJBs, and JMS Queues.

Creating a Trace File from EM12

Creating a trace file from EM12c is quite easy and doesn’t require a DBA offering up the world to allow a developer or support person to perform this action.

Real Application Testing report On Premise vs. Oracle Public Cloud

Just a quick post today as I wanted to highlight a video that has been made available by one of my colleagues, Valentin Tabacaru. Valentin is a sales consultant based out of one of our Spanish offices. The
YouTube video shows a SQL Performance Analyzer execution and report generation using real world workload testing between On Premise Oracle 11gR2 Database and Oracle Public Cloud 12c Pluggable Database Service. Both environments are managed using EM12c providing a single pane of glass to both monitor and manage the environments. The video lasts a shade under 24 minutes, so go and grab yourself a coffee, sit back and enjoy!

Upcoming Raspberry Pi Family Coding Day Project

I’ve had a lot of people email and message me asking me what I’m doing with the Raspberry Pi and I wanted to share before the actual RMOUG Quarterly Education Workshop, (QEW) this Friday at Elitches.

Consolidation Planning

More and more companies are consolidating environments.  Server sprawl has a high cost to any business and finding ways to consolidate to more powerful servers or to the cloud is a productive undertaking for any company.

The Consolidation planner in Enterprise Manager has been around for quite some time, but many still don’t utilize this great feature.
