Mining Listener Logs

When is the last time you looked at the listener logs? Perhaps never. Not a very good idea. Listener logs contain a wealth of information on security events - it shows you the profile of hosts connecting to the database, the programs they are using and attempting to communicate but failed, among other things. But reading the listener logs is not exactly a pleasant experience. A while ago I wrote a series of articles on an online eZine called DBAZine.com on how to create an external table to read the listener logs using simple SQL; but unfortunately DBAZine.com has folded.

I have placed the articles on my website for your reference. As always, I would love to hear from you how you felt about these, stories of your own use and everything in between.

Calculate SQL_ID and SQL_HASH_VALUE from SQL text

Some time ago I wrote an article about the 10g+ SQL_ID being just a hash value of the SQL statement text. It’s just like the “old” SQL_HASH_VALUE, only twice longer (8 last bytes instead of 4 last bytes of the MD5 hash value of SQL text).

Slavik Markovich has written a nice python script for calculating SQL_IDs and SQL hash values from SQL text using that approach.

Slavik’s article is available here:

Security, Forecasting Oracle Performance and Some stuff to post… soon…

I’ve been busy this February “playing around/studying” on the following:

1) Oracle Security products (Advance Security Option, Database Vault, Audit Vault, Data Masking, etc. etc.). Well, every organization must guard their digital assets against any threat (external/internal) because once compromised it could lead to negative publicity, lost revenue, litigation, lost of trust.. and the list goes on.. I’m telling you, Oracle has a lot to offer (breadth of products and features, some of them are even free!) on this area and you just need to have the knowledge to stitch them..
